Addis Ababa Youth Forum Requested to have an anti-gay Demonstration in Addis Addis Ababa Youth Forum’s Hailemicheal Bizuayehu said that the forum has submitted a letter of request to the Addis Ababa City Administration to have an anti-gay demonstration in the city.
The Addis Ababa Youth Forum is awaiting permission from the Addis Ababa City Administration to hold a mass demonstration in the capital to protest against Lesbians, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexual (LGBT) and the violence that is being committed against minors.
Chairman of the youth forum, Hailemichael Bizuayehu told The Reporter the anti-gay demonstrations are being organized in collaboration with a religious association known as Weyneye Abune Teklehaimanot Spiritual Association.
According to Hailemichael, his forum’s initiative against gay movements has been backed by governmental institutions such as the Addis Ababa City Culture and Tourism Bureau, Addis Ababa Labor and Social Affairs Bureau, Women, Youth and Children Affairs Bureau and the Addis Ababa Police Commission.
The forum, which claims to have over 55,000 members in Addis Ababa, is expecting over 200 thousands people to come to the streets and protest LGBT rights. The chairman said that it will become a part of the awareness raising activities, adding that a lot of children are exposed to rape.
The forum also indicated that it is planning to hold a public forum and symposium among various religious organizations as part of the move to raise public awareness “on the threatening condition of gays”.
For the demonstration, the forum has collaborated with a religious organization named Woineye Abune Teklehaimanot which is known for its documentary film on the life of homosexuals in Ethiopia. The forum said that the objective of the demonstration is to raise awareness on the dangerous problems of homosexuals to the public and the government. “We don’t say that gays should be beaten or be jailed. Our message is for them to be treated out of this life style and to protect others from entering into it” said the demonstration organizers.
The forum also disclosed that it wanted the government to consider the undermined progress of gay movements.
It also aims at preventing homosexuality and claims that the participating individuals are trying to be more organized.
When asked whether the planned demonstration has any relation to the recent event involving the minister of Women, Youth and Children, Zenebu Tadesse’s controversial Twitter message, the youth forum’s chairman told The Reporter that it has nothing to do with it as they had submitted the application to the city administration before the minister’s comment was published on Twitter.
According to Hailemichael, the demonstration will be held in the coming weeks if the city administration grants them permission.
